# Baker Hughes Co Moat

Status: stale. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Baker Hughes has protected technology, continuing technology licenses and demonstrated repeat customer demand, particularly in LNG equipment and services. These establish valuable capabilities but do not establish durable competitive superiority or material switching costs. Historical pricing gains are demonstrated, while fixed-price commitments constrain repricing. Chart has closed, but most integration benefits remain prospective. The evidence leaves the moat uncertain rather than establishing a weak competitive position.

## intangible_assets

Patents, trade secrets and continuing technology licenses support current differentiated capabilities. Repeat LNG equipment awards demonstrate commercial relevance, but the disclosures do not establish sustained superiority over competing technologies.

Durability: Continued licensing agreements and ongoing patent development support persistence. Patent counts do not establish economic importance, exclusivity or a defensible duration.

Risks: Technology must remain competitive, important turbine capabilities depend on external suppliers, and Halliburton also discloses substantial patented and licensed technology. Chart's complementary capabilities do not yet demonstrate a stronger moat.

Invalidation: The advantage hypothesis would weaken if important licenses or supply arrangements ended, or customers repeatedly selected competing equipment because Baker Hughes' technology no longer delivered competitive performance or economics.

Competitors: SLB, Halliburton, NOV, Weatherford, TechnipFMC
## switching_costs

Equipment and aftermarket service relationships support repeat demand: Golar selected Baker Hughes solutions for a fourth vessel and Nigeria LNG extended a multi-year services agreement. These are demonstrated relationships; material customer switching costs remain unproven.

Durability: Long-term projects and services provide visibility, with IET accounting for $37.1 billion of June 2026 remaining performance obligations. Contract duration and backlog do not by themselves establish customer dependency.

Risks: OFSE generally sells well by well without an obligation to purchase. Customers generally have termination rights, and termination fees may not fully compensate Baker Hughes. Select LNG examples cannot establish company-wide retention.

Invalidation: The relationship advantage hypothesis would weaken if existing equipment customers repeatedly moved aftermarket work or follow-on equipment awards to competitors, or service extensions declined alongside cancellations and weaker order conversion.
