# CDW Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

CDW has established technical certifications, favorable vendor pricing, substantial distribution capacity and continuing service commitments. These are current capabilities, but the passages do not establish a durable advantage relative to competing providers or company-wide switching costs. Pricing power appears fragile: customer price sensitivity and lower hardware profit rates coexist with sales and profit-dollar growth. The evidence supports an uncertain moat rather than a demonstrated absence of one.

## cost_advantage

Certifications provide access to favorable vendor pricing and resources, while distribution scale supports fulfillment. These benefits are disclosed, but a sustained cost advantage over competitors is unproven.

Durability: Certifications and associated benefits appear in both the 2024 and 2025 disclosures. Their persistence supports an established capability, without establishing exclusivity or a durable relative cost gap.

Risks: Vendor contracts are primarily short-term and often terminable on notice. Vendors control incentives, and competing channels include direct manufacturers and hyperscaler marketplaces. Lower hardware profit rates show pressure on realized economics.

Invalidation: The candidate advantage would be undermined by loss of certification-linked pricing benefits, material reductions in vendor funding, or evidence that comparable providers obtain equivalent procurement and fulfillment economics. A positive moat conclusion would require evidence of a persistent relative advantage.

## switching_costs

Managed and professional service commitments and software-renewal assistance support continuing customer engagement. Technical expertise may create relationship value, but customer migration costs and company-wide dependency are not demonstrated.

Durability: Non-cancelable service contracts extend beyond twelve months. This establishes contractual continuity for a subset of activity, without proving retention after expiration or durable switching friction.

Risks: Competitive alternatives remain broad, and relationships depend partly on retaining customer-facing personnel. The disclosed service obligation balance fell during first-half 2026; this does not by itself establish attrition.

Invalidation: The candidate switching-cost advantage would be undermined by customers routinely transferring managed services or renewal work without disruption, weak renewals after contract expiration, or sustained loss of existing-customer demand.
