# IDEX Moat

Status: stale. Policy: company-analysis-1.

IDEX demonstrates specialized products, repeated realized pricing and contractual protections at specified Health & Science units. These establish current differentiation and some customer friction, but their economic importance and durability across the portfolio remain unproven. Pricing resilience is mixed: recent price/cost improvement depended on tariff refunds and included customer rebates. The uncertainty reflects insufficient evidence of a durable structural moat, rather than established competitive weakness.

## intangible_assets

Proprietary products and retained design rights support current differentiation. Microfluidics' exclusive production of its branded product family and proceeds from a patent infringement settlement provide specific supporting evidence, but do not establish protection against alternative technologies.

Durability: Potential protection depends on continued engineering relevance and enforceable intellectual property. The passages do not establish patent lifetimes, substitution difficulty or the share of sales protected.

Risks: Competitors can develop superior alternatives or circumvent intellectual property. Ownership of technology and branded exclusivity do not by themselves establish durable economic rents.

Invalidation: Material protected-product losses to substitutes, successful challenges to core intellectual property, or persistent pricing concessions on differentiated products would undermine this thesis.

## switching_costs

Customer-specific engineering creates plausible switching friction. Specified Health & Science units retain tooling and designs, restrict their reuse and require approval and potential reimbursement for cancellation. These are current contractual protections; substantial costs of replacing IDEX remain unquantified.

Durability: Protection applies to covered orders and seller-owned designs. Continued customer dependency beyond individual orders and its portfolio-wide prevalence are unestablished.

Risks: Final proposals and separately negotiated agreements can override standard terms. Customers can discontinue applications, and cancellation protection does not establish repeat purchasing.

Invalidation: Evidence that customers routinely transfer designs to alternative suppliers without material expense, negotiate away these protections, or terminate programs without meaningful economic friction would undermine the thesis.
