M&T has a substantial deposit franchise, demonstrated repeat demand and resilient earnings. Deposits cost less than its wholesale borrowings, but the passages do not establish a durable funding advantage over competing banks or material customer switching costs. Pricing power is mixed: realized fee increases and lower year-over-year deposit costs coexist with sequential funding pressure. Named peer disclosures establish competing capabilities, without proving either a durable moat or a structurally weak position.

Durability: Core deposits funded 78% of average earning assets in 2025. Subsequent deposit growth supports the franchise, but no comparable multiyear competitor funding-cost advantage is demonstrated.

Risks: Deposit growth increasingly favors interest-bearing products, noninterest-bearing balances have declined, and wholesale borrowing remains higher year over year. Competitors also offer broad banking and treasury services.

Invalidation: The funding-benefit thesis would weaken if deposit costs persistently approached comparable wholesale funding costs, or organic deposit outflows required sustained wholesale replacement. Establishing a moat would require persistent competitor-relative funding benefits alongside stable customer demand through repricing cycles.
