# RTX Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

RTX has a narrow moat from embedded engine positions, specialized technology and contractual aircraft-platform rights. Installed fleets, follow-on F135 awards, long-term aftermarket agreements and multiyear munitions awards demonstrate current customer reliance. Protection is uneven across the portfolio, and undefinitized awards do not establish future profitability. Pricing power remains constrained by fixed-price terms and incomplete cost pass-through. Continued demand and production achievements coexist with realized quality costs, supply-chain disruption and compliance failures. The evidence supports persistence, but not exceptional durability or portfolio-wide competitive superiority.

## switching_costs

Embedded aircraft-engine positions and associated service agreements support recurring demand and make supplier replacement consequential. GTF deployment, F135 operating history and follow-on production awards demonstrate a current advantage; aftermarket growth provides indirect evidence of continuing customer reliance.

Durability: Existing fleets and long-term aftermarket agreements support persistence across production and maintenance cycles. New multiyear munitions awards reinforce established-program demand, although their undefinitized terms and optional portions limit certainty.

Risks: Alternative parts suppliers, competing financial incentives, government termination rights and engine-quality failures constrain customer dependence. Aftermarket volume can also reflect required inspections rather than voluntary customer preference.

Invalidation: Material replacement of RTX on established aircraft programs, sustained diversion of aftermarket work to other suppliers, or cancellations and persistent delivery failures that prevent follow-on awards from converting into repeat sales would undermine this advantage.

## intangible_assets

Specialized engine technology, accumulated operating experience and paid contractual rights on aircraft platforms create barriers to displacement. These rights and demonstrated deployments support an advantage beyond the accounting value assigned to intangible assets.

Durability: F135 operating experience and follow-on awards demonstrate established capability. Contractual platform rights extend protection over their underlying economic benefit, but the passages do not disclose sufficient exclusivity durations or comparative technology performance to establish exceptional durability.

Risks: Quality failures can impair the value of technical differentiation. Capable competitors, required technology transfers and costly platform commitments can reduce the economic benefit retained by RTX. Development projects remain potential advantages.

Invalidation: Loss or nonrenewal of material platform rights, demonstrated technological displacement on established programs, or recurring quality and maintenance costs that persistently overwhelm the economics of protected positions would invalidate this advantage.
