# Solventum Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Solventum has a narrow, concentrated switching-cost advantage in Health Information Systems: disclosed long-term contracts and embedded clinical and reimbursement workflows are supported by continuing adoption and growth. The passages do not establish comparable durable protection across MedSurg and Dental. Historical price increases demonstrate some pricing ability, but recent growth and margin improvements include volume, advance orders and tariff refunds. The proposed HIS separation could remove the clearest evidenced advantage from Solventum.

## switching_costs

HIS has a current switching-cost advantage from long-term contracts and deeply embedded revenue-cycle and clinical workflows. Existing-customer upgrades and subsequent adoption provide operating support for customer dependence. This advantage is concentrated in a business representing 16.3% of 2025 consolidated sales; it does not establish company-wide lock-in.

Durability: Workflow integration, decades of coding expertise and substantial document processing support persistence beyond a single product cycle. Contract lengths, renewal outcomes and migration costs are undisclosed, limiting confidence in the duration. HIS remains part of Solventum in the supplied disclosures.

Risks: Established software competitors, new entrants and AI could reduce replacement costs or integrate competing capabilities into broader platforms. Hospital budgets constrain purchases. The proposed separation could transfer this advantage outside Solventum; benefits from that transaction remain prospective.

Invalidation: The advantage would be undermined by repeated contract losses or nonrenewals, easy migrations to competing platforms, sustained declines in existing-customer upgrades and adoption, or evidence that competing automation eliminates workflow dependence. A completed HIS separation would invalidate attribution of this advantage to the remaining Solventum business.

Competitors: Optum, Microsoft (Nuance), Epic, Oracle (Cerner), Waystar, Athena
