# Airbnb Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Airbnb's large, growing marketplace supports a narrow network advantage: broad supply attracts demand, while booking demand attracts hosts. Growing app engagement and disclosed cross-booking provide additional evidence beyond scale alone. Frequent cross-listing and realized direct-booking leakage limit customer dependency and durability. Higher accommodation prices alongside booking growth demonstrate some pricing resilience, but a stable implied take rate does not establish stronger platform fee pricing power.

## network_effects

Airbnb has an established two-sided marketplace advantage supported by over 9 million active listings, continued supply and booking growth, and observed cross-booking between offerings. Its accumulated marketplace and trust infrastructure help connect hosts with demand; the strength of the reinforcing effect is inferred from operating evidence rather than directly measured.

Durability: A narrow advantage is supported by continued marketplace growth across successive reporting periods and increasing app engagement. Durability is qualified by nonexclusive supply and limited switching friction. New services and hotels offer potential reinforcement, with only early evidence of cross-booking.

Risks: Hosts often cross-list, and direct bookings already reduce platform usage. Google can influence discovery. Marketing spending is growing faster than revenue, while regulation can constrain supply and impose costs. Trust protections create value but also require spending and do not eliminate safety risks.

Invalidation: The advantage would be undermined by sustained declines in active supply and completed bookings despite rising acquisition spending, material deterioration in repeat or cross-booking demand, or persistent fee concessions required to retain marketplace activity. Increasing direct-booking leakage or regulatory restrictions that materially reduce usable inventory would also challenge the thesis.
