# Abbott Laboratories Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Abbott has a narrow moat supported by diagnostic equipment and consumables contracts, minimum purchase commitments, and protected technology with demonstrated medical-device demand. Pricing power is mixed: nutrition achieved price increases, but rebates, price controls and historical device price declines constrain freedom. Nutrition weakness and respiratory-test declines show uneven resilience. The completed Exact Sciences acquisition expands the portfolio but does not yet demonstrate stronger competitive durability or successful capital allocation.

## switching_costs

Diagnostic instrument placements tied to reagents and consumables, minimum purchase obligations, and services for installed equipment and implanted devices create current contractual customer dependency. The contracts support recurring demand; the magnitude of technical switching costs is not quantified.

Durability: At December 2025, remaining performance obligations included $6.1 billion in Diagnostics and $444 million in Medical Devices, with recognition extending beyond three years. June 2026 disclosures continue to identify minimum purchase and installed-equipment service obligations. This supports multiyear persistence without establishing permanent lock-in.

Risks: Some contracts permit termination. Demand for respiratory tests can fall despite equipment placements, and pricing remains exposed to competition, rebates and controls. Renewal rates and replacement-platform economics are undisclosed.

Invalidation: The advantage would weaken if minimum purchase commitments and associated consumables revenue persistently contracted after separating acquisition effects, or customers increasingly terminated instrument contracts and replaced Abbott platforms without meaningful economic friction.

## intangible_assets

Abbott owns or licenses a substantial patent portfolio, and its technology is commercially productive: medical-device sales increased across multiple categories, including CGM and leadless pacemakers. Together these support a current technology advantage, although growth alone does not establish relative product superiority.

Durability: The disclosed patent expiration range extends from 2026 through 2046, and device sales grew across 2023–2025 and again in the first half of 2026. Individual patent importance, exclusivity and competitor performance are not supplied, so portfolio breadth does not establish exceptional durability.

Risks: Patent circumvention or loss, superior competing technology, reimbursement constraints and product safety problems could erode the advantage. Nutrition's past recall and subsequent uneven recovery demonstrate that brand and regulatory standing can be damaged. Acquired goodwill and hoped-for synergies are not evidence of a moat.

Invalidation: The claim would weaken if loss or circumvention of important protection coincided with sustained declines in established device demand, or if Abbott required persistent price concessions to maintain demand while competing technologies displaced its products.
