# Ares Management Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Ares has a narrow moat from established institutional relationships and investment structures that sustain fees over multiple years. Repeat fundraising demonstrates demand, while contractual terms support revenue persistence. These advantages do not establish superior investment returns or broad pricing power. Effective fee-rate changes largely reflect product mix and performance-linked fees. Termination rights, fee pressure, personnel competition and acquisition costs limit durability.

## intangible_assets

Established institutional relationships support repeat fundraising and distribution access: existing investors supplied 79% of direct institutional fundraising in 2025, including commitments to subsequent vintages and new products.

Durability: Repeat commitments demonstrate a current relationship advantage. Its persistence depends on investment outcomes, service and retaining investment professionals; the passages do not establish exceptional durability or superior peer performance.

Risks: Investors can allocate future commitments elsewhere. Competitors may offer stronger resources, lower fees or higher distributor payments. Proprietary information and sourcing superiority remain management assertions.

Invalidation: Sustained declines in repeat institutional commitments accompanied by weaker fundraising across subsequent vintages, material client departures or fee concessions needed to retain demand would undermine this advantage.

## switching_costs

Multi-year fund relationships and continued SMA fees until underlying investments are liquidated create friction in moving existing fee-bearing assets away from Ares.

Durability: Disclosed average remaining terms span several years across investment strategies. This supports persistence for existing assets, but does not lock in successor-fund commitments or make perpetual capital irrevocable.

Risks: Many advisory contracts permit termination on 30 to 90 days' notice. Certain perpetual agreements permit 30-day termination, and some vehicles require annual renewal. Existing-fund fee protection provides limited evidence of freedom to raise prices.

Invalidation: Material early terminations, removal of Ares as manager, fee cessation before asset liquidation, or replacement fundraising persistently failing to offset fund runoff would invalidate the expected fee persistence.
