# Broadcom Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Broadcom has an evidenced narrow moat from accumulated semiconductor IP, customer-specific engineering knowledge and long-standing collaborative design relationships, reinforced by multi-year contractual commitments. Strong realized demand supports these current advantages. However, competitive design selection, customer insourcing, concentration and financing exposure constrain durability. Pricing evidence is mixed: historical price reductions are disclosed, while stronger contractual protection and resilient gross margins do not establish sustained pricing power.

## intangible_assets

Accumulated IP and customer-specific system knowledge support differentiated semiconductor engineering. These capabilities reflect existing collaborative relationships; reported AI demand provides operating corroboration beyond management's leadership assertions.

Durability: Years of collaborative development and accumulated expertise create a replication hurdle, but continued advantage requires successful investment and competitive product development.

Risks: Customers can develop their own products or tooling, competing technologies can displace existing designs, and suppliers serve competitors too. Strong industry demand does not establish relative market leadership.

Invalidation: Repeated losses of subsequent-generation designs, material customer migration to internal products or tooling, or sustained demand deterioration attributable to inferior technology would invalidate the claimed differentiation.

## switching_costs

Collaborative semiconductor development creates relationship-specific engineering friction, while firmly committed multi-year contracts protect portions of semiconductor and software demand. Contractual protection is demonstrated; the magnitude of technical switching costs is inferred rather than quantified.

Durability: Protection extends over disclosed multi-year commitments. Remaining performance obligations reached $179.2 billion at August 2, 2026, including a long-term custom AI accelerator contract, but commitments do not establish repeat wins after expiration.

Risks: Customers remain free to choose competing or internal solutions for future designs and additional purchases. Custom products also constrain Broadcom's ability to redeploy inventory, making dependency bilateral. Concentration increases customer bargaining exposure.

Invalidation: Material committed-customer defaults or renegotiations, recurring failures to renew comparable software agreements, or repeated replacement of Broadcom in successor designs would undermine this advantage.
