Biogen has a narrow, eroding moat supported by product-specific intellectual property and monetized collaboration rights. Existing royalties and successful commercial launches demonstrate current economic value, but generic and biosimilar competition has already reduced legacy demand. Pricing power is mixed: higher pricing for high-dose SPINRAZA coexists with realized reimbursement pressure. Pipeline assets and acquisition synergies remain potential advantages rather than demonstrated durable protection.

Marketed-product patents and established royalty and collaboration rights provide product-specific protection and economic participation. Growing OCREVUS royalties demonstrate monetization; patent litigation establishes asserted rights, not their ultimate validity or remaining exclusivity.

Durability: Limited and uneven across products. Existing commercial rights support a current advantage, but the passages do not establish remaining protection periods or portfolio-wide durability. New launches provide partial replenishment without proving lasting protection.
