# Crown Castle Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Crown Castle has a narrow moat supported by long-term tower contracts, limited tenant termination rights and historically high retention. Realized rental escalators demonstrate pricing power within existing contracts, but concentrated customers, Sprint cancellations and DISH terminations constrain that advantage. Long-term land control supports durability without establishing exclusive locations or an efficient-scale moat. The latest supplied filing, filed August 5, 2026, confirms the fiber sale and debt repayments, alongside continuing rental revenue erosion.

## switching_costs

Existing tower relationships exhibit contractual switching friction: initial terms generally span five to 15 years, termination rights are limited, and historical annual retention was generally 98%–99%. Rental escalators generated actual additional billings. These disclosures establish a current contractual advantage; physical relocation costs and superior competitive positioning are not quantified.

Durability: Multi-year contracts and long-term underlying land control support persistence. Approximately 90% and 80% of towers Adjusted Site Rental Gross Margin came from land owned or controlled for more than 10 and 20 years, respectively. Tenant-controlled renewals and demonstrated cancellations prevent treating this durability as guaranteed.

Risks: Three carriers supplied 93% of first-half 2026 site rental revenue. Sprint cancellations and DISH terminations demonstrate that consolidation and counterparty failure can overcome contractual protection. Competing infrastructure, tenant self-provision and alternative deployment methods may weaken renewal economics. Fixed escalators also limit repricing flexibility.

Invalidation: The advantage would be undermined by persistent retention materially below the disclosed historical 98%–99% range, recurring cancellations beyond identified consolidation and default events, sustained renewal rent reductions, or loss of land control at economically important towers. Continued non-renewals exceeding escalators and new leasing would weaken the narrow-moat conclusion.
