# Constellation Energy Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Constellation demonstrates a sustained nuclear operating advantage and repeat retail demand, but the passages do not establish a durable cost advantage or customer lock-in sufficient to confirm an economic moat. Higher capacity revenues and reported higher realized customer margins support favorable pricing outcomes, qualified by administered compensation, contractual offsets and competitive retail pricing. Long-term PPAs demonstrate contracting success; their profitability and pricing premiums remain undisclosed.

## cost_advantage

Nuclear operating efficiency is a demonstrated current advantage: capacity factors exceeded the disclosed industry average and refueling outages were shorter. This supports a possible cost advantage through greater asset availability, but comparative all-in costs and sustained economic returns are not established.

Durability: Reported capacity-factor outperformance annually since 2013 supports persistence of operating expertise. Continued economic advantage depends on maintenance spending, fuel costs, licensing and market compensation; exceptional durability is not demonstrated.

Risks: Outages affected 2026 results. Capital requirements, changing market rules and alternative generation technologies could erode the economic value of operating efficiency. Management's assertions that assets cannot be replicated exceed the demonstrated evidence.

Invalidation: Persistent convergence of capacity factors and outage durations toward industry benchmarks would invalidate the operating advantage. Comparative costs showing that maintenance, fuel and capital requirements absorb the availability benefit would invalidate the proposed cost mechanism.

## switching_costs

Retail renewals and customer duration demonstrate repeat demand and valuable relationships. They support a possible relationship advantage, but do not establish material switching costs: renewal success is also attributed to competitive pricing.

Durability: Power renewal rates remained between 75% and 78% during 2023–2025, while gas renewals declined from 90% to 84%. Approximately two-year contracts and six-year customer duration in the 2025 disclosure support continuity without proving dependency.

Risks: Retail entry barriers can be low, and brokers help customers compare suppliers and reduce costs. Customers may renew because of competitive prices rather than an inability to switch.

Invalidation: Sustained deterioration in renewals and customer duration would undermine the relationship advantage. Evidence that customers readily switch among equivalent offers without material disruption would invalidate the proposed switching-cost mechanism.
