# Cummins Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Cummins has a narrow moat supported by its established service infrastructure, long-standing OEM relationships and contractual switching friction in part of its business. Favorable realized pricing supports some pricing power, but contractual adjustment limits and cyclical demand constrain it. The passages do not establish exceptional durability or a relative cost advantage. Energy-transition investment losses demonstrate that existing strengths do not automatically transfer to new technologies.

## switching_costs

Long-term maintenance and other multiyear arrangements, including certain non-cancellable orders or cancellation penalties, create demonstrated contractual friction. The extensive service network and long-standing OEM relationships reinforce customer continuity, although their contribution to switching costs is indirect evidence.

Durability: Existing contractual commitments provide multiyear support: disclosed transaction prices increased from $6.3 billion at December 2025 to $7.6 billion at June 2026, with some revenue scheduled over periods up to ten years. This supports a limited moat rather than guaranteed customer retention or ten-year competitive superiority.

Risks: Other contracts generally last less than one year. The disclosed commitments combine maintenance, construction and product arrangements, so their growth does not establish renewal rates. Cyclical demand and competing technologies can reduce future orders even while existing contracts remain enforceable.

Invalidation: The assessment would weaken if long-term commitments persistently declined without replacement, cancellation protections materially weakened, established OEM relationships were lost, or customers shifted servicing and replacement demand away from Cummins despite its network.
