# DoorDash Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

DoorDash has a narrow, vulnerable marketplace network advantage. Disclosed consumer activity and membership scale support its ability to attract merchants, whose selection attracts consumers; the feedback mechanism remains an issuer assertion rather than demonstrated superiority over competitors. Short merchant termination periods, nonexclusive relationships and multihoming weaken dependency and pricing power. Actual cash generation and profitability support execution, but do not independently establish a moat.

## network_effects

An established consumer audience attracts merchants seeking demand, while merchant selection attracts consumers. Over 56 million monthly active users and over 35 million membership accounts at December 2025 support a current marketplace advantage, although membership includes paid, trial and partnership accounts.

Durability: Building a marketplace takes time, and substantial participation across successive reporting periods supports some persistence. Durability remains limited by local competition, easy merchant exit and participants' ability to use multiple platforms. Expansion into additional markets is potential rather than proof of a transferable advantage.

Risks: Consumers can shift on price, quality and selection; merchants generally lack exclusivity and can terminate with short notice. Feature imitation, promotion dependence and worker regulation could weaken the network's economics. Disclosed country closures demonstrate limits to geographic expansion, without establishing their cause.

Invalidation: The narrow-moat thesis would fail if sustained losses of active consumers and participating merchants reduced selection and demand together, or if maintaining participation required persistent commission concessions and subsidies that undermined cash generation. Evidence that comparable local selection and service can be replicated without a meaningful participation disadvantage would also invalidate the claimed barrier.
