# Consolidated Edison Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Consolidated Edison has a narrow moat supported by its established, geographically concentrated utility infrastructure and regulated revenue recovery. Disclosed cost recovery and revenue decoupling protect delivery economics, but pricing discretion is limited. New affordability legislation, capital requirements, reliability needs and declining gas and steam demand forecasts constrain durability. The passages do not establish exclusive franchises or justify a wide moat.

CECONY's installed utility infrastructure serves approximately 3.7 million electric customers in a concentrated territory. Together with demonstrated regulated cost recovery and delivery-revenue reconciliation, this supports an incumbent infrastructure advantage. The economic difficulty of duplicating that network is an inference from the disclosed footprint and assets; exclusive service rights are not established.

Durability: The existing network and ongoing service demand support persistence, while rate provisions cushion some cost and volume changes. Durability remains conditional on adequate regulatory recovery and continued reliance on the network.

Risks: Affordability legislation limits earnings retention and increases rate-case constraints. Distributed resources, lower gas and steam demand, projected transmission capacity shortfalls and heavy investment requirements could weaken economics even while the network remains essential.

Invalidation: The thesis would be invalidated by sustained customer migration away from network delivery, demonstrated economically viable duplication, or repeated regulatory disallowances and revenue restrictions that prevent recovery of necessary infrastructure costs and a reasonable return.
