# Fiserv Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Fiserv has a narrow switching-cost moat in important processing workflows, supported by multi-year contracts, minimum fees, implementation requirements and continuing processing relationships. Customer migration costs are not quantified. Pricing power remains unproven: value-based pricing is a management claim without disclosed realized price changes. Flat processing revenue alongside declining product sales, rising costs and missed incentive thresholds indicates material pressure, but does not establish that the processing advantage has disappeared.

## switching_costs

Processing embedded in financial institutions' account and payment workflows creates replacement friction. Multi-year contracts and minimum fees reinforce these relationships; continued processing after an alliance non-renewal provides concrete evidence of persistence. Implementation spending supports the integration inference, but represents Fiserv's costs rather than measured customer switching costs.

Durability: Contractual protection extends over multiple years, and high renewal rates are described across annual disclosures. Durability beyond contract renewal depends on service quality and competitive terms; neither quantified renewal rates nor customer migration economics are supplied.

Risks: Competition is intensifying, some hosted software can move to another provider, and alliance structures can end. Recent revenue and cost deterioration limits confidence in resilience. These outcomes do not by themselves demonstrate processing customer losses or realized price concessions.

Invalidation: Repeated processing contract losses, processing relationships ending after alliance separations, sustained declines in comparable processing demand attributable to customer departures, or disclosed migrations requiring little disruption would invalidate the switching-cost thesis. Material removal of minimum commitments or renewal concessions would weaken its economic value.
