# Alphabet Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Alphabet has a narrow moat supported by control of monetizable advertising inventory and established distribution across owned properties and search partners. Revenue growth through June 2026 demonstrates continuing commercial value, while Cloud contracts add committed demand without proving technical switching costs. Disclosed pricing discretion supports contractual freedom, but core advertising price realization is unquantified and devices face actual pricing pressure. Antitrust restrictions, readily terminable advertising relationships, AI competition and substantial infrastructure commitments limit confidence in durability.

Google's established properties and distribution relationships provide differentiated access to advertising audiences, supported by its disclosed control over monetization of advertising inventory. Continuing Services revenue growth corroborates commercial value; inventory control alone would not establish a moat.

Durability: Services revenue growth across 2023–2025 and the first half of 2026 supports persistence. The evidence supports a current advantage, but does not establish exceptional durability, quantified brand preference or a self-reinforcing network effect.

Risks: Many advertisers and distribution partners can terminate at any time. Alternative search modalities and advertising channels can divert demand. The EC has imposed an advertising-technology fine and a cease-and-desist direction, with an appeal pending; these are actual regulatory actions, while their ultimate commercial effects remain uncertain.

Invalidation: The thesis would be undermined by sustained loss of advertiser demand or distribution access accompanied by declining Services revenue and monetization, or by implemented remedies that materially remove Google's inventory control or distribution advantage. Aggregate profit growth alone would not rebut such evidence.
