Interactive Brokers has a narrow moat centered on proprietary automation and a broad global brokerage platform whose development costs can be spread across substantial customer activity. Disclosed operating results support scalability, although comparative cost superiority remains partly an issuer assertion. Pricing power is limited: average commission per order declined slightly, and growth primarily reflected trading activity and customer balances. Strong switching costs, broad network effects and exceptional durability are not established.

Proprietary automation, global market access and an established customer base support economical delivery of complex brokerage services. First-half 2026 revenue grew substantially faster than operating expenses, corroborating scalability alongside the disclosed technology and distribution footprint. This supports a current advantage, but does not independently establish the size of the cost gap against competitors.

Durability: Decades of platform development and integration across more than 170 exchanges and market centers provide a replication burden. Continued investment is necessary; the passages do not establish a protected or permanent lead.

Risks: Competing brokers and technology vendors can replicate capabilities, and brokers using IBKR technology can develop their own. Market-center consolidation could reduce routing software's value. Low-price competition limits monetization, while software failures, credit losses and regulatory costs can offset operating efficiency.

Invalidation: The thesis would fail if competitors matched the disclosed breadth and execution capabilities at comparable or lower delivery costs, or if sustained activity growth required proportionate or faster operating-expense growth and continued price concessions.
