# Iqvia Holdings Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

IQVIA's narrow moat rests primarily on its accumulated, integrated healthcare data and analytics capabilities. Non-cancelable information subscriptions provide limited contractual customer dependency, but do not establish enduring switching costs after expiry. Growing service demand supports continued relevance; intense clinical-research competition, cost pressure and rising restructuring charges limit confidence in resilience. Realized pricing power remains unestablished, and the evidence does not support a wide moat across the group.

## intangible_assets

IQVIA's longitudinal healthcare records, extensive supplier relationships, curated datasets and internally developed tokenization capabilities constitute a differentiated information asset. Reported growth in information-related services supports commercial relevance; data volume alone does not establish superiority or exclusivity.

Durability: Historical data accumulation and integration capabilities plausibly take time to reproduce. Reported proprietary data increased from 61 petabytes for 2023 to 68 for 2025. This supports persistence, but supplier exclusivity, replacement costs and a long-term competitive lead are not established.

Risks: Supplier restrictions, privacy regulation, unauthorized use and competing data offerings could weaken differentiation. The older Veeva litigation disclosure illustrates both attempted protection and competitive challenge; its current resolution is not supplied. AI initiatives remain potential reinforcement rather than demonstrated incremental moat.

Invalidation: Material loss of data access or permitted uses, competing datasets demonstrably matching longitudinal coverage and integration, or sustained contraction in information-service demand accompanied by customer substitution would invalidate this advantage.

## switching_costs

Information subscriptions typically run for one to three years and are generally non-cancelable without refund provisions, creating a current contractual obstacle to departure. Multi-year technology arrangements provide additional continuity, although post-contract switching costs are not quantified.

Durability: Protection is bounded by contract terms. Continuing service growth supports demand indirectly, but the passages provide no renewal rates or demonstrated migration costs. This is a modest supporting advantage rather than proof of group-wide customer lock-in.

Risks: Most technology arrangements last one year or less. Clinical-research backlog includes wholly unperformed contracts customers can cancel, and competition for strategic collaborations is intense. Information-subscription protections cannot be generalized to all services.

Invalidation: Widespread shortening or removal of subscription commitments, substantial non-renewals, or evidence that customers readily replace IQVIA at expiry without operational disruption would invalidate durable switching-cost claims.
