# Loews Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Loews has a narrow, subsidiary-specific moat centered on Boardwalk Pipelines’ permitted infrastructure and firm capacity contracts. Repeated renewal pricing gains, including higher contracting rates in 2026, support a current advantage. CNA’s mixed pricing and retention and deteriorating underlying underwriting results limit the group assessment. Hotel pricing improved, but durable differentiation is unproven. Contingent pipeline projects represent potential expansion rather than demonstrated returns.

Boardwalk’s existing permitted pipeline infrastructure, substantial construction requirements and firm capacity reservation contracts support a localized infrastructure advantage. Realized renewal pricing gains corroborate this advantage; the passages do not establish exclusive territories or an absence of competing pipelines.

Durability: Firm reservation charges support revenue continuity over contract terms, while permitting and construction requirements constrain replication. Higher renewal rates in 2023–2025 and higher contracting rates in 2026 demonstrate persistence, without establishing guaranteed long-term pricing power.

Risks: Contracts expire, competing pipelines and changing production geography affect renewal economics, and FERC constrains rates. The top ten customers account for 66% of projected contracted revenues. Of the $19.6 billion projected contracted revenues at year-end 2025, $9.9 billion depended on growth projects subject to approvals and construction risk. Energy substitution could weaken demand.

Invalidation: The thesis would weaken materially if successive renewal cohorts produced lower rates and lost committed capacity, reservation revenue declined persistently despite available infrastructure, or competing routes displaced Boardwalk’s service. Repeated project cancellations or cost overruns that prevented adequate realized returns would invalidate the growth extension of the thesis.
