# Lockheed Martin Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Lockheed Martin has a narrow moat supported by complex, interdependent defense programs and demonstrated follow-on production and sustainment demand. These relationships create switching friction, but the passages do not establish exceptional durability or broad pricing power. Negotiated fees, fixed-price losses, government termination rights and realized program setbacks constrain value capture. Capacity expansion agreements support future demand; their production targets remain prospective.

## switching_costs

Complex, interrelated program deliverables and continuing F-35 production and sustainment demand support an incumbent advantage. Replacing an integrated program supplier plausibly entails substantial coordination and technical friction, although replacement costs are not quantified.

Durability: Long-cycle programs, increased sustainment volume and substantial backlog support persistence across program phases. Backlog is evidence of committed demand, not guaranteed revenue or proof that every program is protected from competition.

Risks: Government customers can terminate contracts, change procurement policies and shift financial risk to contractors. Actual classified-program losses and performance problems show that customer dependency does not ensure attractive supplier economics. Supply constraints can also encourage customers to choose alternatives.

Invalidation: The thesis would weaken materially if incumbent platforms repeatedly lost follow-on production or sustainment work to substitutes, if procurement changes enabled replacement without substantial integration friction, or if persistent losses prevented the company from earning economic benefits from retained programs.
