# RTX Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

RTX has a narrow moat supported by embedded aircraft-engine positions, specialized technology and contractual platform rights. F135 operating history, follow-on awards and growing aftermarket demand demonstrate current advantages. These do not establish equally durable protection across all businesses. Pricing power is limited by incomplete cost pass-through and fixed-price terms; recent aftermarket growth primarily reflects volume. Quality failures and compliance settlements are realized weaknesses, although continued growth and production achievements show that the advantages have not disappeared.

## switching_costs

Aircraft platform integration makes initial engine and component selections consequential for subsequent parts and services demand. F135 deployment across F-35 variants, follow-on production awards and realized aftermarket growth support an embedded position and continuing customer dependence.

Durability: Operating history and follow-on production support persistence within existing platforms. The passages do not quantify replacement costs or establish a guaranteed duration, and aftermarket suppliers can compete with the original manufacturer.

Risks: Alternative parts suppliers and aftermarket incentives limit capture of installed-base spending. Powder-metal compensation demonstrates that customer dependence also creates substantial service and quality obligations.

Invalidation: The advantage would weaken if RTX lost follow-on engine positions on existing platforms, customers materially shifted maintenance and parts purchases to alternative suppliers, or RTX aftermarket demand persistently declined while the relevant installed fleet remained active.

## intangible_assets

Specialized aviation and defense capabilities, demonstrated F135 operating experience and disclosed contractual platform rights create barriers to replacing RTX on established programs. Repeated defense awards and production milestones support commercial relevance beyond technology descriptions alone.

Durability: Current deployment, contractual exclusivity assets and repeat awards support a program-based advantage. Specific exclusivity terms and comparable competitor capabilities are missing. Development projects and targeted future efficiency improvements are potential advantages rather than demonstrated extensions of the moat.

Risks: Capable competitors, required technology transfers, quality failures and procurement compliance problems can erode differentiation or access to contracts. Intellectual property importance alone does not establish technical superiority.

Invalidation: The advantage would weaken if existing platform rights expired without replacement, established programs were repeatedly lost to substitutes, transferred technology enabled replacement suppliers, or quality and compliance failures caused material exclusions from follow-on awards.
