# Sba Communications Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

SBA has a narrow moat supported by site-specific, long-term leases, substantial non-cancelable rental commitments and demonstrated repeat renewals. Contractual escalators protect pricing within committed terms, but competitive concessions and concentrated carrier bargaining power constrain broader pricing freedom. Realized consolidation-related churn and declining domestic operating income show meaningful erosion. The passages do not establish a superior cost position, local infrastructure scarcity or exceptional durability.

## switching_costs

Site-specific leases generally lasting five to fifteen years, together with substantial non-cancelable rental commitments and frequent renewals, create contractual customer dependency. This supports an incumbent leasing advantage, although physical relocation costs are not quantified.

Durability: Protection extends through existing committed terms: minimum tower rental income totaled approximately $11.55 billion at December 31, 2025, including fixed escalations. Renewal history supports persistence beyond individual terms, but renewal options belong to tenants and are not reasonably certain.

Risks: Carrier consolidation, technology retirement, customer financial distress and competitive lease concessions weaken protection. Three carriers supplied 87.8% of domestic leasing revenue in 2025. Land-access disputes and alternative infrastructure also threaten individual sites.

Invalidation: The advantage would be invalidated by sustained increases in ordinary tenant departures beyond consolidation and technology retirement, widespread early releases or concessions that undermine committed rents, or persistent renewal failures demonstrating that site-specific contracts no longer protect customer relationships.

Competitors: American Tower Corporation, Crown Castle International
