# Schwab Charles Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Schwab has a narrow moat supported by a large client franchise supplying low-cost funding and recurring asset-based business. Actual funding costs, net new assets and engagement support this advantage beyond margins alone. Pricing power is mixed: Schwab controls certain interest rates, but clients can move cash to higher-yielding products and revenue per trade declined. The passages do not establish strong switching barriers, network effects or exceptional durability.

## cost_advantage

Schwab's established client franchise provides substantial low-cost deposit and brokerage cash funding. In 2025, average bank deposits of $238.1 billion cost 0.50%, and average brokerage client payables of $94.9 billion cost 0.26%, versus materially higher disclosed borrowing costs. Its large operating platform and continued asset gathering support the franchise, although comparative total costs against rivals are not established.

Durability: The existing funding base, $519.4 billion of 2025 core net new assets and subsequent growth in managed investing solutions support persistence over multiple years. Durability remains conditional on retaining client relationships and cash balances; the evidence does not establish a decade-long advantage.

Risks: Clients have reallocated sweep cash into higher-yielding investments, requiring more expensive funding. Some reallocations remain within Schwab but weaken funding economics. Interest-rate changes, competitive deposit pricing and actual platform disruptions can erode the advantage. Revenue per trade also declined despite greater trading activity.

Invalidation: The thesis would be invalidated by sustained replacement of low-cost client cash with wholesale funding, materially rising client funding costs that eliminate the disclosed funding-cost differential, or persistent net asset outflows and falling engagement across comparable reporting periods.
