# Snowflake Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Snowflake demonstrates strong repeat demand and enterprise expansion, but the passages do not establish a durable structural moat. Non-cancelable capacity contracts provide current revenue protection; they do not establish lasting switching costs. Open data formats explicitly reduce lock-in, while marketplace network effects remain potential rather than demonstrated. Pricing power is unproven because consumption growth is not evidence of higher realized prices. These findings indicate insufficient evidence of a moat, rather than an established weak competitive position.

## switching_costs

Existing-customer expansion and non-cancelable capacity contracts demonstrate customer commitment and current contractual protection. They support a possible switching-cost advantage, but migration costs and dependency are not established.

Durability: Protection exists during capacity contract terms. Durability beyond those terms is uncertain, particularly as external customer-controlled data environments reduce lock-in.

Risks: Snowflake explicitly reports increased competition and less lock-in with external environments. Customers have also shortened contracts and optimized consumption. Strong net revenue retention measures spending expansion, not gross customer retention or switching difficulty.

Invalidation: Sustained cohort spending contraction, material capacity-renewal losses, or documented migrations with little disruption would invalidate the proposed dependency advantage. Continued expansion without evidence of migration friction would still leave switching costs unproven.

## network_effects

The disclosed network connects data providers, consumers, and application developers through data sharing and a marketplace. This establishes functionality that could support network effects, but not a demonstrated advantage from increasing participation.

Durability: Potential only: the passages do not quantify marketplace participation, transactions, exclusive content, or incremental customer value as the network grows.

Risks: Open formats can reduce platform dependence. Broader product categories increase competition, and AI capabilities depend partly on third-party technologies. Management's platform-positioning claims do not demonstrate defensibility.

Invalidation: Evidence that customers can access equivalent data products and counterparties elsewhere without material loss of value, or that growing participation fails to improve adoption or repeat usage, would invalidate the proposed network effect.
