# Synopsys Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Synopsys has a narrow moat supported by customer dependence on continuously updated EDA software, iterative technical interaction, complex product portfolios and multiyear commitments. These establish switching friction, although migration costs and renewal rates are undisclosed. Realized pricing power remains unestablished. Results through July 2026 support continuing demand but show persistent Design IP weakness. Ansys integration offers potential benefits without demonstrated evidence of a wider moat.

## switching_costs

EDA customers depend on critical software updates and ongoing technical interaction to meet product launch requirements. Contracts spanning many products and non-cancellable spending commitments reinforce this dependence and create switching friction. The friction is supported by disclosed customer obligations, although its monetary cost is not quantified.

Durability: Recurring technical dependence appears more durable than an individual contract. Typical two-to-three-year arrangements and substantial remaining commitments provide current support, but continued relevance requires sustained innovation. The evidence supports a narrow advantage without establishing exceptional long-term durability.

Risks: Design IP has experienced actual roadmap failures and underperformance. AI disruption, internal development, domestic alternatives and export restrictions could weaken dependence. Customers negotiate favorable portfolio terms, limiting pricing discretion. Updates are not integral to utility for certain S&A licenses, so the EDA mechanism cannot automatically be extended across Ansys.

Invalidation: The thesis would be invalidated by sustained customer migration to competing or internal tools with little workflow disruption, repeated replacement of core EDA tools, or declining renewals and commitments attributable to lost product relevance. Sustained comparable-contract price concessions accompanied by customer losses would further undermine the economic benefit of switching friction.
