# Stryker Moat

Status: published. Policy: company-analysis-1.

Stryker has a narrow moat from patent-protected product differentiation, supported by continued innovation spending and demonstrated demand. The passages do not establish durable customer lock-in or company-wide competitive superiority. Pricing power is modest and uneven: small positive pricing contributions coexist with disclosed competition-driven price reductions. Spine impairments and cybersecurity-related production disruption demonstrate limits to resilience.

Existing patents restrict duplication of unique product designs and features. The disclosed patent portfolio, continuing research investment and higher unit volumes support a current differentiation advantage, although they do not establish the economic importance of individual patents. Reputation-based superiority remains a management assertion.

Durability: Protection can persist while relevant patents remain enforceable and innovation maintains product relevance. Research spending supports renewal of the portfolio, but patent expiration schedules, protected revenue and comparative product performance are absent. Exceptional or company-wide durability is not demonstrated.

Risks: Significant research competition requires continuing investment. Competitive pressure already reduced expected Spine demand and caused impairments. Certain products have experienced price reductions. Supply constraints and the 2026 cybersecurity incident also impaired operations; these do not by themselves establish loss of patent protection.

Invalidation: The advantage would be undermined by disclosed loss or invalidation of commercially important patent protection followed by successful duplication, or by sustained unit-volume declines and competition-driven price reductions across the principal businesses despite continued innovation spending. Repeated competition-driven impairments extending beyond Spine would also challenge the portfolio-level conclusion.
