Here's a free stock portfolio backtest spreadsheet to compare how different investments would have performed.

You can download it here.

This spreadsheet allows you to backtest your portfolio strategy and compare how an investment would have performed compared to a benchmark such as the S&P 500 in the past X years.

Google Sheets Stock Portfolio Backtest

In order to be able to edit the portfolio backtest spreadsheet, you need to make a copy.

  1. Go to the Portfolio Backtesting Spreadsheet here
  2. Click on "File" and "Make of Copy"

You have now your own copy of the Google Sheets portfolio backtesting your can edit with your own data.

Most of the data is pulled automatically from Google Finance.

Excel Stock Portfolio Backtest

Alternatively, you can also download the backtesting spreadsheet in an Excel format.

  1. Go to the Portfolio Backtesting Spreadsheet here
  2. Click on "File", then "Download" and "Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)"

However, it is best to use Google Sheets, because backtesting automtically pulls historical stock prices from Google Finance.

How to backtest an investment strategy

In order to backtest your investment strategy, you need to configure the two data

  1. Duration: For how many years you want to backtest ? (by default, 5 years)
  2. Amount invested: How much is initially invested (by default 10,000 USD)

Then you can edit the different tickers in colors (you can find the right tickers corresponding to your stocks using Google Finance) The first line is considered as the benchmark.

The backtesting spreadsheet will simulate an investment in each of the tickers and display which one would have performed the best.

Here's an example of backtest that compares how 10,000 USD invested in Apple, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft would have perfomed compared to the S&P 500 in the last 5 years :

In this example, Apple gave the best performance, and Amazon was the worst performing stock.
